(vol. 1–10, 1704–12; vol. 11 and 12, 1717).Galland’s main text was a four-volume Syrian manuscript, but the later volumes contain many stories from oral and other sources.
The Arabian Nights is a collection of stories, all of which revolve around one main plot: a new wife, Shahrazad, must tell her husband, King Shahrayar, a new story every night lest he kill her in the morning. While some stories stand alone, several of Shahrazad’s stories contain a number of shorter tales, which are “told” by characters in Shahrazad’s story.
The Arabian Nights were also added to by succeeding generations. Indeed, the three most famous stories from the 1,001 Nights didn’t become part of the Arabian Nights ‘canon’ until the early eighteenth century, as we’ll explore below. Clearly this collection of tales is worth a closer look.
