Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.
The Church teaches Purgatory is a state of being. In this state, we are purified of sins so we may enter Heaven. It is a merciful state, and all souls in Purgatory enter Heaven. Heaven is a state of perfect communion with Jesus Christ. This state is important, because no sin may abide in God's presence.
