Ciarán Bourke was born in Dublin on 18 February 1935, but lived most of his life in Tibradden, County Dublin. His father, a doctor, was in practice in the city. The children had an Irish-speaking nanny. Ciarán's early exposure to Irish continued throughout his education, attending Colaiste Mhuire, Parnell Square, Dublin.

Dubliners were often hit by tragedy. The Dubliners have been struck by tragedy several times over the years. In 1974, one of the founding members, Ciaran Bourke, suffered a brain haemorrhage while performing in concert. He recovered well enough to make a brief comeback but then suffered a relapse.
