When the family shifted to Auckland, he attended Mount Roskill Grammar School, but with a further shift to Taranaki he went to Stratford Technical High School. In 1957 he enrolled at the Canterbury University School of Fine Arts at Ilam, graduating in 1960 with a diploma in sculpture.
