Greenwood is a city in and the county seat of Greenwood County, South Carolina. The population in the 2020 United States Census was 22,545 down from 23,222 at the 2010 census. The city is home to Lander University.

True to its name, it embellishes the western portion of South Carolina with tall forests, rolling moors and hills. It got its name from judge John McGehee’s wife, since they owned the plantation that was Greenwood back in 1823.
Greenwood, county, western South Carolina, U.S. It consists of a hilly piedmont region bordered to the northeast by Lake Greenwood, which is impounded on the Saluda River by Buzzard Roost Dam. Lake Greenwood State Park and a portion of Sumter National Forest are within the county’s borders.
