Schools in Bahrain can be classified into two: government or public schools and private or international schools. Government schools Public education in Bahrain includes 6 years of primary schooling (age 6 to 11), 3 years of secondary school (12-14), and 3 years of secular school.
The school is operated by the Bahrain International School Association (BISA) with the United States Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and takes students from Kindergarten to Twelfth grade. Graduating seniors can earn an American diploma or an International Baccalaureate diploma.

The Bahrain School was founded in August 1968 in Awali, as the Bahrain American Elementary School, a Department of Defense School with a staff of one teaching principal and three teachers. They provided for the educational needs of forty students in grades one through eight.
