Geling Yan ( simplified Chinese: 严歌苓; traditional Chinese: 嚴歌苓; pinyin: Yán Gēlíng; born 16 November 1958 [1]) is a Chinese-American author and screenwriter. [2] Early life. Yan was born in Shanghai, China in 1958. She is the second child of Yan Dunxun and Jia Lin. She has an elder brother Yan Geping (严歌平). [3] .

严歌苓 （1958年11月16日 — ），華裔美国人作家， 好莱坞 编剧。 目前定居在德国 [8] 。 生平. 严歌苓1958年出生於 上海 ，自小生活在书香世家。 其父作家萧马在 阶级斗争 中被打为“ 右派 ”，随后举家移居 安徽省 马鞍山市 。 在马鞍山市，严歌苓与哥哥严歌平在 安徽省作家协会 的大院里长大，12歲時參加 中國人民解放軍 成都軍區 文工團 [9] 。 1979年 中越戰爭 時，嚴歌苓曾自告奮勇做戰地通訊員，到 雲南 的野戰醫院採訪傷員 [10] 。 严歌苓于1978年发表童话诗《量角器与扑克牌的对话》。 1980年開始發表作品，1986年加入 中國作家協會 ，1989年赴美留學。 1990年進入美國 芝加哥哥伦比亚学院 就讀，獲寫作碩士學位。

Born in Shanghai, she served with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) during the Cultural Revolution, starting at age twelve as a dancer in an entertainment troupe.
