Biography. Poet and critic James Fenton was born in Lincoln in 1949, and was brought up in Yorkshire and Staffordshire. He was educated at a musical preparatory school attached to Durham Cathedral, where he was a chorister, progressing from there to Repton public school in Derbyshire.
