Born and raised in New York, Helen Levitt has made most of her photographs in the city's streets. Her interest in photography began in 1931; she learned darkroom technique while working for a portrait photographer, and by age sixteen had decided to become a professional photographer.
Observing public spaces as if they were stage sets, Levitt unobtrusively photographed personal dramas and mundane moments, often capturing surreal juxtapositions of people, places, and things. She was particularly fascinated by the imaginative play and athletic movements of children.
