Sheila Gaffney is a sculptor whose Foundation and Undergraduate years were spent at the Camberwell School of Art & Crafts in London followed by postgraduate studies at the Slade School of Fine Art. She is the winner of several Awards including the Natsopa Award for Sculpture and the Vikki Oppenheim Blum Rites of Passage Travel Award.
Professor Sheila Gaffney is a sculptor with a long commitment to crafts and the material object. As Professor of Research (Innovation & Development) she contributes to the development and implementation of the University’s research ambitions.
Using ideas drawn from psychoanalytic thought, Sheila Gaffney reflects on the use of her old sketchbook pages to make current work. The article draws on the memory of seeing Eva Hesse’s work for the first time and the transformative potential of a shift in what is seen as legitimate in the making of art work.

I identify as a life modeller and acknowledge influences from the European and British sculptural discourses of the late twentieth century, however my definition of ‘life’ when I am modelling relates to my lived experience and the body I inhabit.
