The Academy Award for Best Original Score is an award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to the best substantial body of music in the form of dramatic underscoring written specifically for the film by the submitting composer.
For instance, there are many years where one film won the award for “Scoring of a Musical Picture”, and another film won the award for “Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture”. Today, we consider both films winners in the category of best “Original Score”.
The 14th Academy Awards honored film achievements in 1941 and were held at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was briefly cancelled due to the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. [1]
