Jun 1, 2023 · Le Sage was so busy with projects that he didn't get around to recording as a leader until 1963, when he was 36. He directed a group called New Directions in Jazz, a fascinating ensemble akin to what cellist Fred Katz in the U.S. was doing at the time.
Bill Le Sage was born in London in 1927. He began playing drums at the age of fifteen and then taught himself to play piano. He began playing gigs as a teenager and formed his own band at the age of eighteen before doing National Service. In 1945 he had formed his own sextet and was playing in the Johnny Dankworth quintet.
