Thompson was born in Peoria, Illinois. He and his parents, Dr. Laurence B. Thompson and Pauline (née Marshall), moved to California when he was a year old. He attended University High School where he was a classmate of Norma Jean Baker, later to be known worldwide as Marilyn Monroe.Thompson enrolled at Occidental College with plans to become a dentist, but he switched to divinity studies.
Although he geared himself up for major film stardom throughout the 1950s, it took a leading role on a 1960s TV series opposite a lion and chimpanzee to make Marshall Thompson a genuine household name.
Thompson was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 24, 1942, to musician William "Nose" Thompson and Mary Thompson. His father, a pianist played with Redd Foxx, and musicians Joe Williams and Henry Red Allen Orchestra at the Apollo and The Cotton Club. Thompson's father is credited under the name Bill Williams on several recordings for Allen in the 1940s.
