Known throughout his life as Jim, he was born Alan James Gwynne Cellan-Jones in 1931 in Swansea, the son of Lavinia (née Dailey) and Cecil Cellan-Jones, a surgeon who once invited Dylan Thomas to speak at the annual dinner of the local British Medical Association.
