When the eight hiders were finally arrested and taken away on August 4, 1944, along with their two helpers Kugler and Kleiman, Miep Gies was the only person that could keep the business running. She and Bep Voskuijl had not been arrested, and the office had not been cleared out by the Germans. They had also left the spice mills in the basement.
