Frank Lanning (August 14, 1872 – June 17, 1945) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in 84 films between 1910 and 1934. Frank B. Lanning Jr. (1906-1987) is best known for his long career (1937-1982) as a sports cartoonist for the Providence Journal Company newspapers. The primary focus of his thousands of newspaper drawings and freelance illustrations was Rhode Island athletic teams and personalities.
Lanning was active in a number of civic organizations. He was the first president of Words Unlimited, a statewide organization of sports writers and broadcasters. In 1965, he was the principal founder of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and served as its first president from 1965 until 1976.
