People of the Talisman is a science fantasy novel by American writer Leigh Brackett, set on the planet Mars, whose protagonist is Eric John Stark. This story was first published under the title Black Amazon of Mars in the pulp magazine Planet Stories, March 1951.

in People of the Talisman, Stark attempts to fullfill the request of a dying friend to take a precious object stolen from the old city of Kushat back to its rightful place. Unfortunately Stark runs across a horde of northern barbarians planning to sack Kushat, and their leader, Lord Cieran, knows of the talisman, and wants it for himself.
Stark and a dying friend of his have made camp in the wilderness. The friend gives Stark a talisman to return to his native city, where he stole it. Before he can even leave, he is found by raiders and brought, captive, to an army about to attack that city. Its leader has him flogged to try to get the talisman from him, but he escapes.

People of the Talisman opens with Stark trekking north with a friend on his last legs. Said friend wanted to return to the city of his birth to die. He has a guilty conscience; he stole the talisman of his people before leaving.

Jan 1, 2022 · The Secret of Sinharat has a memorable female antagonist and a somewhat-less-interesting-in-comparison female ally, while People of the Talisman has a female ally that is capable of taking care of her own self. Both stories boast of vividly drawn setting and intriguing, if sometimes dangerous, lore.
But the Talisman had been secretly stolen years before, and Kushat now lay helpless before the planned attack of Ciaran's mountain hordes. What Ciaran didn't know was that Stark himself had the Talisman, and he was grimly determined to use it to exact a savage revenge on the Lord of Mekh.
