Jan 9, 2009 · Verizon Wireless paid $5.9 billion for the equity of Alltel and divested some markets to comply with regulatory approval. The acquisition expanded Verizon Wireless’ network coverage to 290 million people and increased its customers by 12.9 million.
Verizon Wireless bought Alltel Wireless for $28.1 billion in 2009, becoming the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. The deal affected millions of customers in the Midwest and South, who received letters informing them of the service change.
