Yakov Alexandrovich Protazanov (Russian: Яков Александрович Протазанов; 4 February (O.S. 23 January ) 1881 – 8 August 1945) was a Russian and Soviet film director and screenwriter, and one of the founding fathers of cinema of Russia.
Russian director from 1911, former actor. Fled Russia during the post-Revolution civil war and worked for a time in France. Returned in 1924 to direct his most famous film, the pioneering science fiction Aelita, the Queen of Mars (1924).
