''Joy Ride'' adds the detail that we never see the villain. We only hear his voice and see his truck. There is a kind of horror movie that plays so convincingly we don't realize it's an exercise in pure style.
The plot concerns Lewis Thomas, a young man who decides to go cross-country to pick up his high school sweetheart, Venna Wilcox, from college. On his way there, he bails his brother, Fuller Thomas, out of jail. Fuller, looking for a good time, decides to ride with Lewis.
