The film is an adaptation of Sacha Guitry’s novel Les Mémoires d’un tricheur, published a year before the film’s release. The film opens up with the titular “tricheur” (played by Guitry himself) penning his memoirs. The story is told chronologically, occasionally reverting to the present.
