Jane, who calls herself Lil, marries Nick and he abuses her. Soon the racketeering boss, Farley, orders Jane to work at the Dead Rat Cafe, a dive infamous for its sleazy clientele. Meanwhile, Jane's brother Eddie quits school and comes to the city in search of her.
