    • The Complete Guide to Traveling Anywhere with only A Carry on Bag Or Less

    • The 80/20 Rule

Hey! Welcome to this ridiculously in-depth guide about how to pack a suitcase! I’m James Eagleman, full-time traveler. Overpacking is by far the most common travel mistake I see. Here I will be providing you with your briefing on packing light and traveling light. For some this guide may be a simple refresher course, for others it will provide some...

It’s when we travel lightest that we most become ourselves. Underneath all your possessions you find your true self. Nobody likes carrying heavy bags, paying checking fees and worrying about airlines losing luggage. It’s a drag… But we are addicted to Stuff. And the airlines know we’re hooked. Baggage checking fees are a tax on our attachment to po...

You might be familiar with the Paretto Principle also known as the 80—20 rule. If not, it roughly goes like this — for many events roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. So for example… 80% of the profits comes from 20% of the customers Or… 80% of the crops comes from 20% of the seeds sown. There are hundreds of examples. The Paret...

    • Clothing. I’m fairly minimalistic when it comes to clothing. Regardless of trip length, I never pack more than about a week’s worth of clothes. I find that it’s just easier to wash clothes during a trip than to have to pack a giant wardrobe.
    • Footwear. Footwear is hugely personal, but here’s what I pack: 1x hiking or comfortable walking shoes. 1x backup/everyday shoes (usually low-top canvas sneakers)
    • Toiletries. When it comes to toiletries the most important thing is not to pack full-size bottles. They are just too bulky! Liquids can’t exceed 100ml anyway when flying carry-on.
    • Organization. I use packing cubes for basic organization. I’ve used over a dozen brands and I have two favorites: eBags slim packing cubes if you’re on a budget, or Peak Design packing cubes if you want something nicer.
    • The 3 Rules of Packing Light. You need less than you think you do. That’s true for travel, and it’s probably true in life as well. As a general rule, I believe we are better off packing less and trusting ourselves more.
    • Best Travel Gear. Wallet, keys, phone. If you just had to pick three things to take with you on a normal day, these items would be at the top of most people’s list.
    • Best Travel Clothes. Note: Given that I’m a man, I’m only reviewing men’s travel clothing. Most pieces of specialized travel clothing are not worth the money.
    • Minimalist Travel Toiletries. MUJI Hanging Travel Case (small) – Of all the items on this packing list, this was the hardest one to find.
  2. Packing light means more freedom when you travel. With less to lug around, you can easily maneuver through crowded spots, speed through baggage claim, make last-minute plans without worrying what to do with your stuff and spend less time tracking gear.
