1 9 8 1 (UK) 1 x 180 minute episode. From 9.00 pm to midnight on Tuesday 29 December 1981, BBC1 broadcast one of the most densely symbolic, allusive and obscure pieces of television ever made. For the first hour and fifteen minutes or so, it was a finely crafted supernatural thriller.
Artemis 81 might not be the precise model Director General Mark Thompson would like his staff to follow – though it surely has all the makings of an internationally-lucrative DVD title – but producers, directors and writers could do much worse than to at least check it out.
