The Leather Boys (1964) Hit the road: gay guilt and desire in the mid-60s. Envisaged as a ‘Romeo and Romeo in the south London suburbs,’ Gillian Freeman’s 1961 novel centred on an explicitly homosexual relationship.
The Leather Boys follows Reggie, a young mechanic who rashly rushes into marriage with Dot, a 15 year old who leaves school to become his housewife. Both are teenagers driven to wed by hormones rather than love and long term compatibility.
