Set in the late 1860s sometime after the American Civil War in Texas, the film begins with Colonel Douglas Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef), a former Confederate Army officer who is a self-employed bounty hunter-killer illegally stopping the train he is riding on outside the small town of Tucumcari.
