The main character is a Soviet girl named Maria, who must take out the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God from the territories occupied by the enemy.
The film’s title, Maria. Save Moscow, connects the military and patriotic theme to a religious one. The plot is based on two war-time Orthodox legends: the first concerns the supposed meeting between Joseph Stalin and the Orthodox Saint Matrona of Moscow (Matrona Nikonova), who was canonized in 1999.
