Red Sonja is a fictional sword and sorcery comic-book superheroine [3] created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973, partially inspired by Robert E. Howard 's character Red Sonya of Rogatino .
A broken young woman, the red goddess Scathach endowed Sonja with the incredible skill to handle any weapons, especially swords, under the special provision she would never be with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat.

Sonja, a young, red-haired woman, is gang raped and left for dead by hundreds of soldiers of Queen Gedren, a despot who murdered Sonja's parents and her brother after Sonja had rejected the queen's sexual advances and scarred Gedren's face.
Red Sonja was born a member of a group of red-haired, bronze-skinned people called the Favored, who were created by the red goddess Scathach. These people were granted supernatural strength and skill with weapons for the purpose of slaying the Drommach, flesh-eating man beasts that inhabit the caves of the Favored.
