Jan 1, 1999 · "Stigmata" is possibly the funniest movie ever made about Catholicism--from a theological point of view. Mainstream audiences will view it as a lurid horror movie, an "The Exorcist" wannabe, but for students of the teachings of the church, it offers endless goofiness.
Synopsis. In the Brazilian village of Belo Quinto, Father Andrew Kiernan, a former scientist and a Jesuit priest who investigates supposed miracles, examines a statue of the Virgin Mary weeping blood at the funeral of Father Paulo Alameida, who had previously experienced stigmata.
A Vatican priest, who travels the world investigating religious manifestations, analyzes a woman who is suffering from stigmata, or the wounds of Christ, and what he finds make him question both his own faith and the Church's centuries old beliefs.
