Troilus and Cressida is set during the later years of the Trojan War, faithfully following the plotline of the Iliad from Achilles ' refusal to participate in battle to Hector 's death. Essentially, two plots are followed in the play. In one, Troilus, a Trojan prince (son of Priam ), woos Cressida, another Trojan.
Troilus and Cressida. The seven-year siege of Troy by Greek forces has reached a stalemate. The Trojan King has carried off Helen, wife of Menelaus the Greek King and Achilles refuses to fight in order to secure her return.
The bitter Trojan War drags on - the Greeks blame Achilles' apathy for low morale, while Troy's hero Hector challenges one of the enemy to a personal duel. And after her father exchanges Cressida for a Trojan prisoner, the war becomes personal for her distraught lover Troilus.
