I-beams are typically made of structural steel and serve a wide variety of construction uses. The horizontal elements of the I are called flanges, and the vertical element is known as the "web". The web resists shear forces, while the flanges resist most of the bending moment experienced by the beam.
The corrugated steel web solely provides the shear capacity of the girders where the shear strength is controlled by buckling and/or steel yielding of the web. The flanges provide boundary supports for the web.
Open-web steel joists are lightweight structural elements utilized in construction to support floors and roofs. They consist of parallel top and bottom chords connected by a web of steel bars in a geometric pattern. This open-web design efficiently distributes loads while minimizing material usage.
Web openings have been used for many years in structural steel beams, predating the development of straightforward design procedures, because of necessity and/or economic advantage. Openings were often reinforced, and composite openings. Much of the work is summarized in state-of-theart reports (Darwin 1985, 1988 & Redwood 1983).

In these cases basic principles of statics are used to compute the moments of inertia for the attached elements.
