Aug 25, 2021 · Overview. What is an ice pick headache (primary stabbing headache)? An ice pick headache is an uncommon headache disorder. It causes a sudden, sharp, stabbing head pain (or a quick series of pains). This pain comes on unexpectedly and lasts a few seconds.
- What causes sharp pain in the heart? Chest pain isn’t always as bad as you might think. A 2016 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that less than 6% of people who go to the emergency room for chest pain actually have a life-threatening problem.
- Pulmonary embolism. Sharp chest pain could signal a pulmonary embolism, a clot that lodges in the lungs. Besides pain, symptoms can include shortness of breath, pale skin, racing heart and cough.
- Gastrointestinal problems. Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can cause a burning sensation in your throat or chest — classic heartburn.
- Musculoskeletal problems. If you recently hauled a heavy box or worked out too hard at the weight gym, you might have developed a case of costochondritis — inflammation of the cartilage around the sternum.
- Appendicitis. Appendicitis is inflammation of your appendix, a tubed organ. Appendicitis can be recognized by sharp pains in the lower right part of your abdomen.
- Gallstones. Gallstones are stone-like objects that can form in your gallbladder or bile ducts. Cholesterol or bilirubin comprise the stones. When gallstones block a duct in your gallbladder, you’ll feel intense pain in your abdomen.
- Ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in the ovaries. They can form by themselves during ovulation. If they become large enough, ovarian cysts can cause intense pain in the lower abdomen, usually on the side of the body where the cyst is.
- Irritable bowel syndrome. Irritable bowel diseases are digestive tract conditions that cause mild or severe pain before a bowel movement. If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you’ll notice patterns in your abdominal pain because it consistently occurs after you eat specific foods or at certain times of the day.
