A sea is a large body of salty water. There are particular seas and the sea. The sea commonly refers to the ocean, the wider body of seawater. Particular seas are either marginal seas, second-order sections of the oceanic sea (e.g. the Mediterranean Sea), or certain large, nearly landlocked bodies of water.

Oct 19, 2023 · Sea. The “seven seas” has been used to describe the world’s great water bodies for a long time. But there are actually about 50 water formations that can be called a “sea,” and they are quite diverse when it comes to their size, location, and ecosystems.
Ocean and sea. The terms "the ocean" or "the sea" used without specification refer to the interconnected body of salt water covering the majority of Earth's surface. It includes the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern/Antarctic, and Arctic oceans. As a general term, "the ocean" and "the sea" are often interchangeable.
- Earth Underwater. Oceans are areas of salty water that fill enormous basins on the Earth’s surface. Even though Earth has one continuous body of saltwater, scientists and geographers divide it into five different sections.
- Climate Control. Kelp forests provide food and shelter for marine animals. Oceans help keep Earth’s climate habitable. By moving water around the globe, the oceans help to keep places from getting too hot or too cold.
- Ocean or Sea? Animals such as seahorses, clownfish, and sea turtles all live on coral reefs. And the corals are animals too! The words “ocean” and “sea” are often used to mean the same thing.
- Ocean Life. Some giant manta rays have 20-foot wingspans. Scientists think that up to 91 percent of marine species have not yet been identified; but there could be as many as 700,000 of them!
