  5. Aug 8, 2020 · Katzelmacher was a revelation. One of only a handful of Fassbinder films which I had not seen before, it seems among his best, and most challenging, works. Fassbinder’s second feature film, Katzelmacher (1969) is a tour de force of stark visual beauty and ambiguous but riveting characters.

  6. Katzelmacher builds up its powerful portrait of latent violence quite relentlessly, each tableau scene designed to show bigotry and prejudice clashing in non-communication. Yet instead of this pent-up violence releasing itself, for instance, in the repeatedly announced castration of Jorgos, the (pinteresque) verbal aggression merely fizzles out.

  7. Katzelmacher is arguably the director's most powerful anti-racist, anti-Fascist statement, the stark simplicity of its mise-en-scène serving to strengthen its central message.
