Ciarán Bourke, a ballad singer, guitarist, and tin-whistle playing founding member of the Dubliners folk group, died Tuesday in Dublin. He was 48. Founded in 1962 by Bourke and four fellow Irishmen, the group gained fame in Britain, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand and their homeland for their earthy, raucous style and folk songs.

In 1974, one of the founding members, Ciaran Bourke, suffered a brain haemorrhage while performing in concert. He recovered well enough to make a brief comeback but then suffered a relapse. He was left paralysed on the left side of his body and he was never able to perform again.
