  1. Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke, PC (2 April 1799 – 17 September 1873) was a British naval commander and Conservative politician. Background. Born at Sydney Lodge, in Hamble le Rice, Hardwicke was the eldest son of Admiral Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke, second son of Charles Yorke, Lord Chancellor, by his second wife, Agneta Johnson.

  2. Two years later he succeeded his uncle as 4th earl of Hardwicke. He served as a lord in waiting during Peel’s second ministry, before resigning over the repeal of the corn laws, and, after briefly returning to active service at Genoa in 1849, he held cabinet office in Lord Derby’s minority governments of the 1850s.
