Thomas Jefferson Rusk (December 5, 1803 – July 29, 1857) was an early political and military leader of the Republic of Texas, serving as its first Secretary of War as well as a general at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Thomas J. Rusk presided over Annexation Convention of 1845, his legal knowledge contributing significantly to the drafting of a state constitution. Rusk and Houston were elected United States Senators by the first state legislature. Rusk received the larger number of votes and the longer term of office. He served in the Senate until 1857.

Thomas Jefferson Rusk was the 32 year old from Nacogdoches. Rusk started out as a lawyer in Georgia around 1825. He made sizable mining investments in the gold region of Georgia but in 1834, the managers of the company that he invested in had embezzled all the funds and fled to Texas.
