CAPERNAUM kə pûr’nĭ əm ( Καφαρναούμ, Καπερναούμ; כְּפַר נַחוּם; village of Nahum ). A city on the NW shore of the Sea of Galilee which served as Jesus’ Galilean home base. The city evidently was named after someone called Nahum but there is no proof that this was Nahum the prophet.
Capernaum was first established during the Hellenistic period (2nd century BCE). During the period of Jesus ' activity in the Galilee (beginning of the 1st century CE), it was a large Jewish village.
