Universal Motown Republic Group was one of the three Universal Music Group umbrella units in North America to deal primarily with mainstream pop, rock, and urban performers; the others being: The Island Def Jam Music Group and Interscope-Geffen-A&M.
Universal Motown Records was an American record label that operated as a division of Universal Motown Republic Group. It was the contemporary incarnation of the legendary Motown Records label, and the "urban" half of UMG, although there were some rock artists on the label (along with its sub-labels) as well.

After the UMRG unit was dismantled in 2011, Universal Motown was absorbed to the recently-revived Motown, while Universal Republic was renamed back to Republic. Universal Records in turn was permanently shut down, moving all of its artists to either Motown or Republic.

In 2011, with the Universal Motown Republic Group disbanded, Universal Motown's merger was divided on behalf of Motown, including that of Universal Records, which was absorbed by UMG. Today, Universal Motown's catalog remains under the hands of Motown through UMe .
