In 1941 Marion G. Romney was called as one of the first five assistants to the Quorum of the Twelve. As a bishop and stake president, Elder Romney had implemented key welfare programs to help the people he served become self-sufficient in the economically trying time of the Great Depression.
Marion G. Romney was born in the Latter-day Saint community of Colonia Juárez in Mexico and lived there until he was about 15 years old. A political revolution that began in 1910 forced the Romneys and others to leave everything behind and flee to the United States.
