Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester (7 January 1355 – 8 or 9 September 1397) [2] was the fifth surviving son and youngest child of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault .
Thomas of Woodstock, duke of Gloucester was a powerful opponent of King Richard II of England (ruled 1377–99). The seventh son of King Edward III (ruled 1327–77), he was created Duke of Gloucester in 1385 and soon became the leader of a party opposed to Richard II, his young nephew.

Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester. The grave of Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, in the chapel of St Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey, was originally covered by a brass depicting images of himself, his wife, his father, mother and brothers and sisters with all their coats of arms.

Thomas of Woodstock was the fifth surviving son and youngest child of King Edward III and his wife Philippa of Hainaut, daughter of William III, 'the Good' Count of Holland and Hainaut, and Joan of Valois. Thomas was born on 17th January, 1355 at Woodstock Palace in Oxfordshire.

Dec 4, 2020 · Thomas was created Earl of Buckingham at Richard II’s coronation. He had little use for his royal nephew who was only ten at the time, and he always treated the lad with scorn. Even when Richard made him Duke of Gloucester in 1385 (along with his brother Edmund, who was made Duke of York), relations did not improve between them.
