Charles of Valois (12 March 1270 – 16 December 1325), the fourth son of King Philip III of France and Isabella of Aragon, was a member of the House of Capet and founder of the House of Valois, whose rule over France would start in 1328.
Charles III was the count of Valois from 1285 and of Anjou and Maine from 1290. He was the son of a king, brother of a king, uncle of three kings, and a father of a king. Though he himself never gained a crown, he sought at various times those of Aragon, France, Constantinople, and the Holy Roman.

Charles’s son and successor, Philip, count of Valois, became king of France as Philip VI in 1328, and thus began the Valois dynasty.

Philip, Count of Valois, son of Charles of Valois, who was the closest heir in male line and a grandson of Philip III (r. 1270–1285 ). Because his father was the brother of the late Philip IV, the Count of Valois was therefore a nephew of Philip IV and the cousin of Louis X, Philip V and Charles IV.
Biography. Fourth son of Philippe III of France (q.v.) and and Isabella of Aragon, father of Philippe VI (q.v.), and uncle to Louis X (q.v.), Philippe V (q.v.), and Charles IV (q.v.). Married (1) Marguerite of Anjou & Maine (1290), thus becoming Count of Valois, (2) Catherine of Courtenay (1302) and (3) Mahaut of Chatillon (1308).
