In 1946, Dr. John Finlay is finally demobilized and he returns to life in private practice in his native Scotland. His partner, Dr. Alexander Cameron , has stayed on passed his retirement age to keep the practice open pending his return but it is now far less prosperous that when he left it and is barely paying for itself.

Dr. Napier starts to promote women's health issues by holding seminars and giving out information to her new patients. She particularly wants to ensure that they know about various approaches to birth control. Doctor Finlay is supportive but warns her to go slow.
Dr. Finlay returns home after WWII to the Scottish village of Tannochbrae. He's welcomed by his old friend and housekeeper but soon learns some upsetting changes lie on the horizon.
