Barbara Jean Hersey (previously Addams, née Day; July 7, 1919 – August 6, 2007) was an American woman best known for having been married to two different famous people, first Charles Addams – the creator of The Addams Family – and then journalist John Richard Hersey.
Media speculation at the time often connected Morticia to Charles Addams' first wife Barbara Jean Day, but he had yet to meet her. In an interview in 1981 he acknowledged that Morticia reflected the qualities he was attracted to, and because of that his wives resembled the character.

In a way, all of Addams' wives represented Morticia and it could be speculated that his drawings of the character represented his own view of the idealized woman.
