William Stonehill Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, on August 31, 1908; the 4th child of Armenian immigrants Armenak Saroyan preacher and poet, and Takoohi Saroyan, of Bitlis. On May 18, 1981, he died of prostate cancer at the age of 72, about a mile from where he was born.
