Democritus (/ d ɪ ˈ m ɒ k r ɪ t ə s /, dim-OCK-rit-əs; Greek: Δημόκριτος, Dēmókritos, meaning "chosen of the people"; c. 460 – c. 370 BC) was an Ancient Greek pre-Socratic philosopher from Abdera, primarily remembered today for his formulation of an atomic theory of the universe.

Democritus, c. 460 – c. 370 BC. Democritus believed humans originated in mud and lived at first as wild animals before slowly learning enough to become civilized. Plato, who lived at the same time as Democritus, said it was the duty of men to father children for the benefit of the state.
