  7. Biography. Alfred Döblin was born in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) in 1878. His father was a tailor, who ran away to America with a much younger employee but was stranded in Hamburg when the escapade failed. Döblin’s mother moved the family of five children to Berlin, where she had relatives.
