Dummett’s thinking about language largely begins from Wittgenstein and from A.J.Ayer’s verificationism. The verificationists used the slogan that ‘only verifiable sentences are meaningful’, to dismiss metaphysics. Dummett, though, argues that verificationism itself embodies a metaphysical view.
