Situated in the centre of the new satellite town then, Church of the Risen Christ was meant to serve a population of 200,000 middle and low-income flat owners. As Toa Payoh town estate grew in its affluence and size, so did the Church and its parish community.

Inaugurated in 1971 by the first Archbishop of Singapore Michel Olcomendy, the Church of the Risen Christ was the first Catholic church in Toa Payoh. The church derives its name from the Christian belief in Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and subsequent resurrection from the dead.
