Sep 9, 2010 · Zero-article 'special thanks' is also used, and is common, but certainly 'a special thanks' is also correct. I can't explain why. It might have come from 'a special vote of thanks' or 'a special round of thanks' or something like that, or it might be treating the word 'thanks' as a quoted word: Let's say a special "thanks" to our sponsors.
